One Thing: Alter Ego
Showing up to meet the moment.
Hi friends,
I’m reading The Alter Ego Effect, and it has me thinking about a question we don’t ask often enough: How do I need to show up?
We’re good at asking, “What do I need to do?” Make the plan. Finish the project. Run the race. Pack for the trip.
But in the moments that matter most, the game plan isn’t the whole story. We also need a way to access the version of ourselves who doesn’t freeze, shrink, spiral, or check out. That’s what an alter ego can do — help you call forward a part of you that can meet the moment.
Your Alter Ego
Choose one “field of play” where you want to show up with intention this summer: a work project, a family vacation, a race, a hard conversation, a creative goal. Now, try building an alter ego that can help you meet that moment.
Name three key qualities. What traits would help you show up well? A few examples: bold, calm, playful, steady, focused.
Choose an image or metaphor. A character, animal, athlete, superhero, natural element, or someone you admire. Pick something that actually energizes you and that represents your three qualities.
Name this version of you. The name is a hook for your brain. It’s a specific identity (like Black Mamba or Sasha Fierce) to step into when the moment arrives.
You’re not becoming someone else when you build an alter ego. You’re giving yourself a way to remember who you can be.
Next week, we’ll talk about the physical cues that can help you access this chosen self.
Take good care,
Lisa

This is brilliant. Im reminded of a conversation I was in a while back where I had the somewhat unpopular opinion against bringing my authentic self to work. I had some counter argument about instead channeling my best self (the completely confident, focused, unflappable version) - now you’ve named it, I’m off to work on refining my “alter ego”. Thanks Lisa.
